| Number of serious prison assaults are down |

Despite a population increase in Illinois prisons -- in part because of the shuttering of numerous facilities two years ago -- the number of serious assaults across the system is down, a Department of Corrections spokesperson says. On the other hand, proponents of re-opening those facilities, including the Tamms Correctional Center in Alexander County, maintain working in prisons has historically been dangerous and overpopulation doesn’t help. Today’s inmate population hovers around 48,000 for a system designed to hold roughly 15,000 fewer prisoners. Read More. |
