| Task force targets prison overcrowding |

MONTGOMERY — Alabama punishes some crimes more harshly than other states, according to a report released last week during a state Prison Reform Task Force meeting. For example, Alabama is among 16 states that consider the theft of something worth more than $500 a felony. Other Southern states have higher thresholds. Similarly, most states have a non-violent classification for burglaries and breaking and enterings, but Alabama does not. Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster, is chairman of the task force exploring ways to reduce crowding in the state's prisons.
