Inmate’s family settles for $3M

DENVER — The state will pay $3 million to settle a lawsuit for the death of a mentally ill inmate who died in shackles at the San Carlos Correctional Facility while staff watched and allegedly ignored his medical needs.

The Colorado Department of Corrections said Tuesday that payment will be made to the family of Christopher Lopez, whose death in 2013 at the Pueblo prison was videotaped by staff.

The DOC said in June, when the family sued the department, it fired three employees and took action against five others in the wake of Lopez’s death. The DOC operates the facility, housing mentally ill inmates, on the grounds of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo.
