OMAHA — Newspaper and broadcast members of The Associated Press have voted the errant early release of hundreds of state prison inmates as the top Nebraska news story for 2014. 1. State officials acknowledged that Nebraska released the inmates too early, despite Supreme Court rulings that spelled out the correct way to calculate their sentences. The discovery by the Omaha World-Herald led to an unprecedented roundup of former inmates, the early retirement of two top prison attorneys and calls for additional reforms. In December, a legislative committee called for more prison administrators to lose their jobs in the wake of several department scandals. The committee proposed 16 major reforms, and its chairman, Sen. Steve Lathrop, faulted Gov. Dave Heineman for a failure to oversee the agency. Heineman said he wasn't aware of all of the Department of Correctional Service problems but addressed them once they came to his attention. Read More. |
