Grant to help treat inmates at Monroe County jail

Every time an inmate from the Monroe County jail requires medical care at an emergency room, it costs roughly $5,000. And many of those prisoner patients have mental illnesses.

But with a new grant expected to become available in January, jail and mental health officials are hoping to curtail those and other burdensome costs. Monroe is one of a handful of Michigan counties that have been approved to receive grant dollars to offer treatment options for people with mental illness.

The Monroe Community Mental Health Authority is set to receive $120,830.
