| Grant to help treat inmates at Monroe County jail |

Every time an inmate from the Monroe County jail requires medical care at an emergency room, it costs roughly $5,000. And many of those prisoner patients have mental illnesses. But with a new grant expected to become available in January, jail and mental health officials are hoping to curtail those and other burdensome costs. Monroe is one of a handful of Michigan counties that have been approved to receive grant dollars to offer treatment options for people with mental illness.
