| Steve Bernal picks new jail chief for Monterey County |

Salinas >> Putting the final, and most-anticipated, piece of his leadership team in place, Monterey County Sheriff-elect Steve Bernal on Monday announced the hiring of San Bernardino County Capt. Michael Moore to oversee the county jail. Moore, who also serves as police chief in the Southern California city of Highland under a contract with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, will oversee custody and correctional operations for Monterey County, which is planning a new jail facility. “Mike is known as a problem solver at the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office. The Monterey County Jail has its share of problems and a problem solver is just what we need,” Bernal said in a statement. Staffing and safety issues have persisted at the jail, one of the most overcrowded in the state. The jail’s average daily population hovers around 1,000, though the population was down compared to 2013 during the most recent survey by the California Board of State and Community Corrections.
