Florida lawmakers return to the Capitol this week for the first round of committee hearings in advance of the legislative session, which begins in March. While the inauguration of Gov. Rick Scott will be the focus for most legislators on Tuesday, the week begins with what is expected to be a contentious hearing today on the future of the state’s troubled Department of Corrections. The hearing is scheduled for the first full day on the job for new Corrections Secretary Julie Jones, who Scott named last month as his fourth head of the department in as many years. Jones will be the first woman to lead the 100,000-inmate, 20,000-employee system, the nation’s third largest. The Senate Criminal Justice Committee will hear testimony on proposed major changes to the system, plagued by reports of inmate deaths and systemic cronyism. Among those scheduled to address lawmakers are a prison counselor who has written about inmate abuse within the state’s prisons and a former Republican sheriff who helped lead a wide-ranging study of the system.
