Deputy to retire after 32 years of service

A Marion County Sheriff's deputy who has been with the department for 20 years is retiring.

Deputy Kevin Rau began his law enforcement career in 1982 when he entered the Army and served as a military police man. He became a corrections officer at the Oregon Department of Corrections in 1988 and then went to the Marion County Sheriff's Office in 1994. During his time there, he served as a patrol deputy, school resource officer, public information officer, training coordinator, negotiator, police dog handler and civil process server, according to the sheriff's office.

In 2006, Rau headed the launch of a 40-hour crisis intervention training program, which focused on the best practices for handling calls involving mentally ill people and gathering resources to address their issues, along with decreasing the rate of unnecessary incarcerations.
