| Pennsylvania prison officials unveil revamped system for handling mentally ill inmates |

The end of the use of solitary confinement as discipline for seriously mentally ill inmates is just one in a series of changes, years in the making, outlined by state Department of Corrections officials Monday. Nearly a quarter of inmates receive psychiatric or psychological care, and one in 12 suffer from severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depressive disorder, said Dr. Robert Marsh, director of the department’s psychology office. Secretary of Corrections John Wetzel said that prisons aren’t the ideal place for people with mental health needs, but added that he isn’t allowed to turn anyone away. Read More. |
