A suspicious package left outside the Mississippi Department of Corrections central records building in Jackson shut down several city streets Tuesday while a bomb squad removed the box. MDOC Commissioner Chris Epps told The Associated Press outside the MDOC Central Records/Hinds County Probation Office that an employee found the "box-sized package" propped against the building's front door early Tuesday morning. Epps later said the package contained no explosives and appeared to be some type of commercial grade transformer or other industrial equipment. Epps said the area around the building at 421 West Pascagoula St., including Pascagoula, Lamar and Gallatin streets, was blocked off while officials removed the package. The building is across the street from the Salvation Army just west of downtown Jackson. "We cleared the area and made sure that everyone was out of the way," Epps said. Epps said none of the building's 60 employees attempted to remove the package and they waited outside while officials from the MDOC; the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Jackson Police Department and the Clinton Police Department Bomb Squad removed the package. Epps said the package was taken to an MDOC training range for further examination. He said a bomb the size of the package could have spread debris over several hundred yards. "I commend my staff for not taking it into their own hands," Epps said. "I think it's important that the public knows to take all safety precautions this time of year." He said he didn't know who left the package but it could have been the work of a prankster. |
