| New prison set to open next month |

PRIESTVILLE – The opening of Nova Scotia’s newest correctional facility is scheduled for Feb. 9. Tim Carroll, superintendent for the Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, said correctional institutes in Antigonish and Cumberland counties will be closing this week and staff transferred to the Pictou County prison will begin their training on Jan. 12. “We are on our way,” Carroll said. “I have been part of this design and development team for the past three years and we are coming to the end of the process.” In November 2010, the Department of Justice announced construction plans for a new 100-cell correctional facility in Priestville. The facility, with two beds per cell, will provide quick and easy access to medical, police, fire and other services. It will replace the aging Antigonish and Cumberland facilities, servicing the courthouses in Truro, Amherst, New Glasgow, Pictou, Antigonish, and, to some extent, Port Hawkesbury. Read More. |
