Convicted murderer known as ‘Captain Nemo’ dies while on parole at care center

SOUTH OGDEN, Utah — A man convicted of murder in the ’90s and sentenced to prison until March of 2095 died this week at a care center, where he had been sent by a parole board in 2012 due to ailing health.

According to a press release from the Utah Department of Corrections, “Eugene N. Woodland, also known as Captain Nemo, died January 8 at a South Ogden care center. The cause was age related.”

Woodland, who was 85, was convicted in 1994 for the 1990 murder of Bruce Larson. Woodland was sentenced to serve five-years-to-life for first-degree homicide and zero-to-five years for third-degree aggravated assault.
