Some Christmas gifts intended for inmates at the Southwestern Michigan Community Correction Center were stolen from First Presbyterian Church before they could be distributed. But the about 60 inmates still got presents, thanks to some extra effort. Church member Nora Edgar, who organized the gift program, said the stolen gifts were socks, knit pullover winter hats, razors and washcloths. There was one of each for the inmates and all were individually wrapped. Orange gloves, crossword puzzle books, notebooks and pens that also had been wrapped for the inmates weren't taken. "It's not a lot, but it's about the only Christmas a lot of them (the residents) will get," Edgar told The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph. Children from the church's youth group wrapped the gifts. The theft was discovered during choir practice Thursday evening. Edgar said Friday that $600 was spent for the original gifts. She ended up spending about $270 for replacement items. Also taken were the church secretary's computer and some meat from the church's food pantry. |

He worked as a general haberdasher for 30 years, but was forced to give up the career he loved due to his keen attention to detail.
