HARTFORD, Connecticut — State officials say Connecticut's prison population reached a 16-year low at the end of 2014 and was highlighted by a dramatic drop in the number of young adults entering the system for the first time. Mike Lawlor, the governor's undersecretary for criminal justice policy, says there were 16,167 inmates in the system on January 1, down from 16,594 a year ago. The drop in the prison population since 2008 has been about 17 percent, down from 19,438 inmates. The last time the year-end numbers were lower was on January 1, 1999, where there were 16,104 inmates in the system, Lawlor said. Read More. |
