SUNBURY - At a time when residents were still dependent on wells for their source of drinking water, county officials were celebrating the completion of the fifth and largest prison built in county history. It was on Aug. 7, 1877 - four years before the Sunbury Water Company was established - when William Frey became the first in a long list of inmates to step foot in the Northumberland County Prison along Second Street. Wednesday's fire caused extensive damage to the facility and may have marked the last time an inmate will ever enter the prison again.
