MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — Officials say a correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility in southeastern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Corrections says 24-year-old Darrell Ballard assaulted the officer Monday morning. Ballard is serving time for a sex offense conviction. According to a news release, officials accuse Ballard of punching the officer several times in the torso and face after the officer told Ballard to put down food he had inappropriately received.
