Feeling deceived by Colorado Department of Human Services officials, the Legislature’s Joint Budget Committee unanimously voted Tuesday to rescind $1.2 million in funding the department is using to hire 53 additional staff without telling lawmakers. The department contends it needs the additional youth services corrections security officers to address staff safety concerns, which were first uncovered by Watchdog.org in a series on skyrocketing attacks on staff at Colorado youth detention facilities.
