Oregon inmate, called 'sociopathic serial killer,' to face charges in 1976 California murders

A man doing time for attempted murder in Oregon will be charged in the 1976 killings of two California women, whose deaths have been tied to the notorious Gypsy Hill murders, the San Mateo County district attorney said Thursday.

Rodney Halbower, 66, has been extradited to San Mateo County, California. He's expected to be charged with two counts of murder and the special circumstance of murder during the course of a rape.

Paula Baxter, 17, and Veronica Anne Cascio, 18, were among five women whose slayings near San Francisco were collectively known as the Gypsy Hill murders.
