| Senators outline steps to fix 'broken' prison system |

LINCOLN — A group of senators who spent months studying what to do about Nebraska's prisons troubles are offering a list of solutions. "Fixing our broken prison system is the No. 1 issue that the Legislature needs to address in the upcoming session," Appropriations Chairman Heath Mello said at a Friday morning news conference. The bills were prompted by crowded prisons and concerns over the lack of attention given to the mental health and substance abuse problems of inmates. Ten Nebraska prisons have in total reached 159 percent of capacity, with some much more crowded. The Diagnostic and Evaluation Center in Lincoln is at 307 percent capacity, the Omaha Correctional Center at 192 percent and the Community Corrections Center in Lincoln at 178 percent. Read More. |
