Lawmakers see lengthy investigation into prison delays

DES MOINES — There’s not much in a maximum security prison that can burn.

“Clothes. Law books. That’s about it,” Department of Corrections Director John Baldwin said after nearly an hour of answering questions posed by members of the House Government Oversight Committee about delays in opening a maximum security prison at Fort Madison.

Despite that, the $132 million, 800-bed new state prison will remain empty for as long as six months until a smoke exhaust system that meets building codes is installed and to retrain staff to operate the state-of-the-art facility.

“But right now I’m just guessing,” Baldwin said.
