Prison reform may include more parole officers, non-violent felony classification

COLUMBIANA — Alabama’s state prisons were built for about 13,300 inmates but now hold approximately 26,000.

To get to an acceptable capacity, officials are considering a variety of prison reform measures — including adding more parole officers and a new felony class for non-violent offenders whose first stop wouldn’t be prison — and some additional construction.

“If we go from 195 percent to 145 percent, I think that will satisfy the federal government,” Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster, said Thursday after a meeting of the Alabama Prison Reform Task Force.
