DOC Working Session Reveals Funding Shortages

Guam - Several pressing issues regarding the Department of Corrections were brought to light at the first working group session hosted by Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson today. Key among them is financing medication for prisoners. DOC says there’s a shortage of funds and they may not get through the month.

"Evidently the director’s medical cost, just for medicine’s alone, have increased from a $100,000 a year to a $100,000 a month," points out Assistant Attorney General Kathy Fokas, one of the attorneys on record for DOC.

Skyrocketing cost of prescription medication, a shortage of medical staff and the inability to attend to all prisoner sick calls in a timely manner—all issues talked about in a working session held today at the Department of Corrections.
