| Prison school's defenders say cuts would hurt mission |

NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) From reading and writing to computer-aided drafting and furniture-making, inmates at Vermont's prisons are learning skills widely seen as key to their success when they are released. But their high school, the one run by the Department of Corrections, is facing big budget cuts. The Community High School of Vermont currently operates in all seven of the state's prisons and from 10 community-based sites. The administration of Gov. Peter Shumlin is proposing to save nearly $2 million from the state budget by eliminating the community-based sites and limiting the Community High School to four of the state's prisons, in Newport, St. Albans, South Burlington and Springfield.
