Non-Profit Proposes Converting Mt. McGregor Prison Site Into State Park

WILTON, N.Y. -- For more than 40 years, most of the more than 1,100 acres of scenic state owned forest land surrounding the now closed Mount McGregor prison have been off limits.

"It has been [Department of] Corrections land, no one had access to it for all of these years," said Maria Trabka, executive director of Saratoga PLAN.

If Trabka and her team are successful, a large portion of that property will eventually be open to the public. The non-profit recently submitted a petition to Governor Cuomo's office and met with members of his administration to discuss transferring control of 763 acres to the State Office of Parks and Recreation, allowing it to be added to neighboring Moreau Lake State Park.
