SUNBURY -- The state Department of Corrections has agreed to continue housing inmates displaced by the Northumberland County Prison fire for $60 a day. The verbal agreement that will be placed in writing was reached Tuesday when Corrections Secretary John Wetzel met with the county prison board.

Following the Jan. 14 devastating county prison fire, Wetzel agreed to house the inmates free for 28 days at the Coal Twp. and Muncy state prisons. That period ends Feb. 11.

All 208 inmates escaped the fire with the men taken to Coal Twp. and the women to Muncy. As of Tuesday, there were 130 males at Coal Twp. and 25 females at Muncy, said corrections spokeswoman Susan Bensinger.
