Black leaders in Tangipahoa Parish, La., are calling for District Judge Zoey Waguespack to step down until an investigation into allegations that she assaulted an inmate in her courtroom is complete. Johnny Duncan of the Tangipahoa Parish chapter of the NAACP says they do not think it's asking too much for the judge to recuse herself pending completion of the investigation. He commented on the situation last week outside the parish courthouse in Amite. Waguespack is accused of grabbing a handcuffed and shackled inmate around the neck and punching him in the ribs on November 17th. The judge denies that such an altercation took place and refused further comment. The sheriff's office confirms, however, investigating a November 29th complaint against Waguespack about the alleged incident made by inmate Thaddeus Long of Hammond. Long, who faces charges in three burglary cases, was in Waguespack's courtroom on November 17th to attend a hearing for failing to appear in court. Authorities say he was in the Hammond City Jail when he missed the hearing date. Sheriff's spokesman Chuck Reed says during the hearing Long allegedly remarked about not receiving justice. He was escorted outside by deputies but Waguespack left the bench and talked to him in the hallway. At that point, Long alleges the judge grabbed his neck and punched him. Deputies, however, say she never touched him. Reed says a report has been forwarded to the district attorney's office and Waguespack has recused herself from presiding over Long's cases. |
