Addiction services double under Ohio prison budget

Drug addiction services are expected to be doubled inside Ohio’s prisons, where 80 percent of inmates have a history of drug abuse.

The funding boost is part of Gov. John Kasich’s budget proposal released Monday, which also looks to put $58 million more over two years toward community-based sentencing options. That additional money will target rural communities to encourage judges to sentence first-time, low-level, nonviolent offenders to community programming instead of prison, said prisons Director Gary Mohr.

“This is revolutionary,” Mohr said of the proposed plans. “It all goes back to our mission of reducing recidivism and victims out there.”

According to state officials, people who receive drug treatment reoffend within three years at a rate of 10.4 percent, compared with 27 percent for inmates who did not receive treatment.
