Lawmakers may get rid of RID program for inmates

A debate looms in the House over a bill that would end the Regimented Inmate Discipline program in the Mississippi Department of Corrections that one lawmaker says is ineffective.

Under House Bill 906, after July 1, 2016, “no person sentenced to the custody of the MDOC shall be ordered to a RID program by any court of the state. The Department of Corrections shall either operate RID programs for inmates sentenced to such a program prior to July 1, 2016, or devise and implement suitable alternatives for any such inmates.”

State Rep. Toby Barker, R-Hattiesburg, said there is no evidence RID is successful.
