Senators may visit overcrowded prisons

LINCOLN — With all the talk of figuring out which laws need to be passed and how much money needs to be spent to solve the state's prison problems, one fact remains:

Prisons bulge at the seams; inmates are crammed too closely; kitchens are taxed trying to feed more inmates than they were designed for; and waits for bathroom can be long, toilet paper in short supply and sanitation less than desirable.

Delays for inmate programs are lengthy and growing. And bottlenecks abound that prevent non-violent inmates who are eligible for parole from getting through the process to early release.
