Private prisons in Arizona could see a $70 million annual bump in funding if the state Legislature approves a request included in the governor’s budget proposal. Gov. Doug Ducey’s request comes as county jails, including the Santa Cruz County facility that is operating at less than half of its 372-bed capacity, are struggling to make ends meet. If the Arizona Department of Corrections used some of the money earmarked for beds at private facilities to house more inmates at the Santa Cruz County jail, it would relieve some of the financial burden for county taxpayers, said Sheriff Antonio Estrada. “We’re struggling and they should consider designating some funds to help us with the issue that we have here, instead of always leaving it up to local taxpayers, property owners and consumers to do all of that,” he said.
