Executive order creates Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform

It was a major policy positions presented at last week’s State of the State address that lawmakers from both parties agreed with, and now there’s a new commission to make criminal justice reform a reality in Illinois. Governor Bruce Rauner signed an executive order Wednesday to create The Illinois State Commission on Criminal Justice and Sentencing Reform.

Commission to address “prison overcrowding”

One of the main goals for the commission is to reduce what the Governor says is prison overcrowding. Rauner said Illinois prisons are one of the most crowded in the United States.

“The Bureau of Justice says the Department of Corrections is operating at over one-hundred-and-fifty percent of its design capacity. That is unsafe to both inmates and staff.”
