Jeffrey Elkins came to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with back pain.  He left with a new charge on his extensive criminal rap sheet, escape.
The Rankin County (Miss.) Jail inmate was allowed to come to UMC Tuesday morning to see a doctor. He never did, escaping from a private security guard wearing his handcuffs and shackles.
Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington says the escape wasn't too hard...just out the door...he walked out undetected".
The guard was hired by Pennington's office. The Sheriff says the security guard told his investigators that he had left Elkins alone for 15 minutes. When the guard came back, Elkins was gone.
He alluded authorities for nearly 7 hours before he was found in some bushes on hospital property.
This wasn't the first time Elkins escaped from authorities. Weeks ago, Clinton Police was transferring Elkins to the Hinds County Jail on a petit larceny charge. Chief Don Byington says, somehow, Elkins opened the back window of the police cruiser and wiggled out. The officer couldn't chase him because there were 2 other suspects in the back seat of the car.
Elkins was arrested on December 20th, in Pearl, for carjacking and aggravated assault. He's been arrested for the very same thing in Hinds County and several times in Texas.
