| Proposal for inmates to earn good time 'not ready for prime time' |

The Judiciary Committee of the Nebraska Legislature waded into the hearing of a bill that would require prison inmates to earn rather than receive sentence reductions, but the bill's author soon admitted its adoption would be premature. Omaha Sen. Merv Riepe introduced the bill (LB425) to replace good time -- an automatic sentence reduction -- with earned time off, saying his Omaha constituents and city officials support it, but he backed away from advocating for its adoption. "We did have influence from the city of Omaha who want to have a safer community as all big places do, but I'm not carrying their bill per se," he said. Read More. |
