BLOOMNGTON — The increase in women serving time at the McLean County jail follows a national trend that has seen more women placed on probation and into jails over the past decade. At the end of 2013, women accounted for 14 percent of the population in local jails — up from 11 percent in 2000, according to the federal Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics. In fact, the number of women in jail, prison and on probation grew at a faster rate than the male population between 2000 and 2010, said BJS data.
