| Tear gas restores order at prison |

Tennessee prison officials said last week that two correctional officers were injured in an incident involving ''less than a handful'' of inmates at Northwest Correctional Complex near Tiptonville. An emergency response team had to use tear gas three hours later to get inmates back to their cells. ''We definitely do not deem this incident as a riot,'' said Roland Colson, assistant commissioner of operation, Department of Correction. The incident began when an inmate kicked an officer in the face around 7 p.m., he said. Several officers rushed to the aid of the officer and other inmates got involved. Some prisoners made phone calls to family members asking them to tell the news media there was a riot, Colson said. ''Inmates like to create stories and get their names in the press,'' he said. Colson said it took three hours to secure inmates within cells, because officials had to assess the situation first to not overreact. One officer had to be treated for minor facial injuries, while another was missing teeth, said Amanda Sluss, department spokeswoman. None of the 124 inmates in the pod was injured, officials said. |
