| Union: Menard's lockdown underscores Tamms' importance |

A union representative says that an inmate brawl that broke out Monday in the recreational yard at Menard Correctional Center in Chester underscores the importance of the resolution Rep. Terri Bryant filed this week, urging the governor to reopen the Tamms Correctional Center as a segregation unit. The Illinois Department of Corrections’ website lists Menard as on “full lockdown” status as of Thursday evening. Ty Petersen, staff representative with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, said employees reported to him that the fight involved up to 25 inmates. Petersen said warning shots were fired by a correctional officer from a security tower. He said no correctional officers were injured, though a few inmates may have suffered minor injuries.
