Gangs brawl Erupts at Utah prison

A housing unit of the Utah State Prison remained on lockdown last Thursday after two gang fights erupted within the two days, officials said.
The 144 inmates -- most of them gang members -- in the Oquirrh 4 unit were restricted to their cells, and visitation was prohibited, said Utah Department of Corrections spokesman Jack Ford. The lockdown probably will continue at least through the weekend, he said.
"We'll consider opening it to visiting next week."
The first fight erupted Tuesday, Ford said, and a second took place Wednesday, prompting authorities to put the unit on lockdown.
Most of the unit's inmates are "low-level" gang members, Ford said, meaning they are not group ringleaders, but rather new gang members or those trying to get in.
At the time of the fights, the inmates were out of their cells but still confined to the housing unit, Ford said. About a dozen people were involved. A handful were taken to the prison infirmary for minor injuries, but no one was seriously injured.
Corrections officials are still investigating the cause of the altercations, Ford said.
