| Jail renovations at Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building reduce outboarding of inmates |

WATERTOWN — Recent renovations at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building have opened up jail space, reducing the number of inmates housed at other facilities around the state from an average of 50 per day to 11 as of Tuesday. “We’ve opened up some space,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Colleen M. O’Neill. “Once 3B becomes opened, we shouldn’t be outboarding any males at all.” The jail has three “pods,” which contain two sections capable of holding 32 inmates each. Up to 64 inmates can be housed in each pod. Because of classification requirements set forth by the New York state Commission of Corrections, the jail is authorized to operate at only 90 percent capacity. Read More. |
