Artist turned prison reform activist to speak Friday

If you ask anyone who knows Wendy Tatter what the St. Augustine artist does best, they’re bound to say, “Batik.” If you ask Tatter what she wants to do best right now, however, she’s apt to say “change the culture from punishment to rehabilitation for her son and others who are incarcerated in Florida’s prisons.”

Tatter will speak from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church Mission House, 130 Martin Luther King Ave.

Her talk will focus on the ways in which punishment versus rehabilitation stifles prisoners’ efforts to learn while imprisoned. Tatter will discuss ways to positively effect change through reform.
