| Panel to discuss incarcerated people and their families |

A panel discussion titled "Caring for Incarcerated Persons and Their Families" will be held at 7:15 p.m. March 24 in the Capitol Room of Northern Illinois University's Holmes Student Center in DeKalb. The free event is part of the NIU Women’s History Month and is open to the public. There are more than 49,000 people in the prisons of Illinois. At the same time on any given day there are at least 731,000 people sitting in jails across the country. The United States has more than 1.5 million people behind bars, and black men are six times more likely to be imprisoned than white men. For each person that is incarcerated there are loved ones, families and children who are affected on the outside. Today, a majority of Americans support moving away from ineffective, costly policies that drive up the prison population, such as mandatory-minimum sentencing and imprisonment for nonviolent and drug offenses.
