Protesters, former inmates want the St. Louis workhouse to close

ST. LOUIS • About 20 people rallied at the steps of City Hall on Tuesday, many of them asking that the City Workhouse jail at 7600 North Hall Street be closed.

The medium-security lockup built in the 1960s has been “under scrutiny for decades,” said Juliette Iacovino, who helped organize the event. “We are glad to have people here who support our effort to shut it down.”

The Michael Brown shooting shined a spotlight on policing and courts practices. Protesters on Tuesday say reform to the corrections system has been overlooked.

Iacovino was flanked by a woman who said it took weeks and a court order to get medications at the workhouse. She also said a women’s area had to be evacuated for a carbon monoxide leak.
