YADKIN COUTY, N.C. — An inmate found dead in the Yadkin County Jail Sunday had been sentenced last week to at least 36 years in prison on charges that he fired at Yadkin County deputies during a December 2012 standoff at a motel that lasted nearly five hours.

John Trenton Smith, 39, was found dead in his cell during a cell check at about 4 a.m. Sunday, the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Smith had been held in a single cell and was awaiting transport to the N.C. Department of Corrections, the sheriff’s office said. There were no indications of foul play, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office asked the State Bureau of Investigation to assist in looking into Smith’s death.

The sheriff’s office released few details about Smith’s death, including how Smith died and whether Smith had any mental or physical health issues. Yadkin County Sheriff Ricky Oliver did not respond immediately Monday to messages left at his office and on his cellphone.
