| Corrections union launches campaign calling for more officers in prisons |

The union that represents state corrections officers announced Wednesday it is launching a campaign to create awareness of what it claims is increasing violence in prisons that requires additional staffing. The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) said in a statement it is starting the digital media campaign to “call attention to this public safety crisis.” The union contends that state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision data show that inmate-on-staff-member assaults are on track this year to be up 50 percent since 2010. It also reveals violent incidents in two other categories — contraband and parolee staff assaults — are on pace to reach five-year highs. Read More. |
