Clay County looks at home buyouts to solve new jail’s parking issues

MOORHEAD – Dorene Morehead does not want to move. She’s lived in her house for 26 years. She runs a day care center there. And over the past two years, she’s spent $23,000 on new windows and fencing for her property.

Morehead, 55, said she wouldn’t have made these improvements had she known Clay County officials are eyeing her block as a possible site of a parking lot for a new jail and law enforcement center. Now she’s worried she and her neighbors will lose their houses to the project.

“Our homes aren’t any different than anybody else’s,” she said. “Our homes are … our homes.”
