Worries about possible inmate trouble forced a day-long lockdown at Sterling, Colorado's prison Wednesday as staff searched for an officer's jacket that was reported missing, the Colorado Department of Corrections confirmed. Supervisors at the state's largest penitentiary ordered the shakedown of two wings holding about 275 prisoners, said department spokeswoman Alison Morgan. Eventually, supervisors deemed it a false crisis after finding the uniform. The officer's clothing had been simply misplaced, she explained. It was feared the officer's jacket may have been swiped in order to effect an escape. "Accidents and mistakes like this happen. There's nothing negligent," she said. "It's a good lesson learned." Still, security momentum kept the hunt moving through wings No. 3 and 4, she said. The unscheduled checks of six housing pods for medium- and high-risk prisoners paid off, though, Morgan said local administrators informed her. |
