Former inmate with HIV sues Michigan prisons for harsh treatment after sex allegation

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A former state prisoner who is HIV-positive claims his diagnosis with the disease led to a more severe punishment than another inmate after the two men were accused of engaging in a sex act.

John Dorn filed a lawsuit Thursday, April 2, in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and his constitutional rights. He said that state laws and prison policies "disproportionately and unlawfully discriminate against incarcerated individuals living with HIV."

The state Department of Corrections, which hasn't been served with lawsuit, had no comment, spokesman Chris Gautz said.
