As Arizona incarcerates people at an increasing rate, Tucson leaders and social services agencies are working to reduce recidivism. In 2013, more than 41,000 people were incarcerated in Arizona, compared with about 19,000 sent to prison in 1995, according to a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The National Institute of Corrections says Arizona incarcerates about 586 adults per 100,000 people, which is a 48 percent higher rate than the national average. It ranks Arizona sixth in incarceration rates per capita, with Louisiana being first with 847 incarcerated adults per 100,000. Read More. |
