| Deschutes commissioners express support for incoming sheriff |

Deschutes County commissioners have expressed continuing support for Deschutes County Sheriff’s Capt. Shane Nelson in the wake of a state investigation into an inmate death at the county jail. In late February, the commission unanimously approved Nelson, who has overseen the corrections division since 2013, to succeed Sheriff Larry Blanton when he retires June 30. Edwin Burl Mays, 31, died of a methamphetamine overdose in a holding cell at the Deschutes County jail Dec. 14. The Oregon Department of Justice agreed to review the incident last week, upon request from Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel. Blanton announced his retirement in late December, nearly two years before the end of his second elected term in office. He recommended Nelson as his successor. Read More. |
