| Sentencing changes 'one step' toward prison reform |

LINCOLN — Changes to automate the state's system for calculating sentences of Nebraska prison inmates should be in place by early October, Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Monday. The upgrades — intended to prevent miscalculations like those made under the administration of former Gov. Dave Heineman, which led to the early release of more than 200 inmates — are "just one step" toward reforming the state's prison system, said Scott Frakes, whom Ricketts appointed to lead the agency in January. The announcement comes 10 months after the public learned the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services had been miscalculating inmate sentences for years. Some 750 inmates had their sentences calculated incorrectly, largely because of a flawed method of applying good-time credit to discharge dates. Read More. |
