Most CCI guards fired after inmate's death are reinstated

We have confirmed that nearly every guard fired in connection with the death of an inmate at the Charlotte Correctional Institution is back on the job.

Ten guards were fired months after Matthew Walker's death. They were among 32 corrections officers terminated in an unprecedented statewide flurry of firings last September. The Department of Corrections called the firings an effort to root out bad prison guards linked to corruption and abuse.

So far seven guards at CCI have their jobs back. Two others are expected to return soon. One guard chose not to return.

Arbitrators hearing the officer's cases have said the state hasn't shown any evidence that guards committed wrong doing.
